Rev. Samuel “Jerry” Colbert, the son of Samuel & Mary Colbert, was born in Annapolis, Maryland.
Rev. Colbert graduated from Annapolis Senior High School and Temple Business School, majoring in Business Administration and Data Processing. Rev. Colbert also attended and received a diploma in Basic & Advance Telecommunications from A.T. &T. Communications School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He preached his trial sermon on January 12, 1976, under the leadership of
Rev. Clarence W.A. Weaks. The Rev. Dr. Charles A. Green, his great uncle, was his spiritual advisor and mentor. It was about this time during his journey, that he heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send and who shall go for me?” Then he answered, “Here am I, send me Lord, I’ll go.” On my journey, the road has been rough at times, but working for the Master has made the mountains easier to climb. “What does it profit a man to gain this whole world and lose his soul?”
Rev. Colbert graduated from the Baltimore-Washington Conference School of License to Preach in May 2006. At the 2006 Baltimore-Washington Conference, Rev. Colbert was commissioned by Bishop John Schol and appointed Pastor of John Wesley United Methodist Church - Annapolis Neck, July 1, 2006. He then studied at Wesley Theological Seminary, completed the Course of Study Program for Ministry, and enrolled in the Master of Theological Arts program.
During his tenure at John Wesley, the following ministries were organized; Spiritual Warfare Study Class; David Dancer’s liturgical dance group; partnership with Manna House Shelter in Baltimore; Street Corner Ministry; completion of the lower level of the church and chaired the 225th Celebration of Methodism in Annapolis. The first Service of Remembrance was held in May 2009 at the Annapolis Neck cemetery, followed by a parade to the church.
Rev. Colbert is currently serving as Pastor of Mt. Zion UMC, Laurel, MD as of July 1, 2023.
Member of the local NAACP, served as Chairperson of (AIMA)Annapolis Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, served as Co-Chair & Chair (GAM) Greater Annapolis Ministerial Alliance; 2009-2010, Chair (GAM) Greater Annapolis Ministerial Alliance; 2010-2011, member of the Annapolis Cluster Public School System, member of Mayor Josh Cohen Advisory Transition Team of Housing & Community Services (2009), served the following ministries of the BWConference: instructor for the Annapolis District School of Faith & Life - 2008, now - the Discipleship Academy, member of the Committee on Ethnic Local Church Concerns, member of the CCYM and Intercessory Prayer Coordinator, Past Vice President of the Baltimore-Washington Conference Board of Evangelism, member of BOOM – Board of Ordained Ministry, member of License to Preach School, Disciple and Cohort Coordinator for Living Well Ministries and Chaplain of Annapolis Police Dept and serves on the Foundation Board of the Police Department.
